The Bay Area's Carpool Debate

By: Kevin L. Nichols

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (July 1, 2010)
As many of you know, today marks the first day of the anticipated bridge toll increases to $5-$6 depending on the time you cross. A derivative of this revenue generating opportunity by the State, is the carpool toll of $2.50 during peek hours. There is some confusion and ambiguity regarding how this toll applies and effects carpoolers specifically.

I have taken an informal poll of both drivers and carpoolers. Most drivers are hoping that carpoolers donate $1 each to help offset the new toll. Others feel that they choose to still drive across the bridge and prefer to pay $2.50 rather than $5-$6.

What do you think? Should carpoolers pay to ride across the bridge even though they are saving their drivers time and an additional $2.50-$3.50? Let us know.
