Tweet your way to a job? Maybe

Social-media sites can help job seekers connect with employers, but it’s not easy

By Catherine Ngai of Medill News Service
WASHINGTON (MarketWatch) — Mitchell Strobl is your average college junior at DePauw University in Greencastle, Ind., but the way he landed his new job is distinctly 21st century.
“I came across this Web site [through] a link that was posted [on my Facebook wall],” said Strobl, 20. The site lined up with his interests perfectly, and after contacting the president of HuntingLife.com, he was soon hired to become a writer and then a product reviewer for the hunting and conservation news site.

The odds of getting a ticket

Is it possible to predict who is more likely to get nabbed for a moving violation? A new study finds luxury vehicles, like Mercedes and Humvees, are more ticket-prone. But driving in a town with budget problems also increases the odds. WSJ’s Joe White explains.
Stories like Strobl’s are rare, especially in a job market as tough as this one. The U.S. economy lost 95,000 jobs in September, and the unemployment rate is 9.6%, according to the Labor Department. As a result, new graduates and young professionals are trying new tools to improve their chances of finding work. Read more on U.S. economy sheds 95,000 jobs in September.
“Social media is a great way to learn about different employers as well as build professional networks that will help create opportunities and open doors,” said Holly Paul, PwC’s U.S. recruiting leader. “I do think now that social media is so prolific and being used by students that…it’s an additive to what they’re doing to connect with other individuals that can help them in their job search.”
A month ago, the buzz about finding work via social-media sites hit a new high. After creating YouTube Instant, a replica of real-time search engine Google Instant for searching videos on YouTube, a 19-year-old Stanford student received a job offer via Twitter — even less than the 140-character limit — from Chad Hurley, co-founder and chief executive of YouTube.
While the success stories generate a lot of excitement, and may prompt some job seekers to rely solely on social media, career experts say that’s not a smart move.
“You really have to be careful with Twitter or Facebook, because it can seduce you into an informality that can really backfire,” said Lonnie Dunlap, director of career services at Northwestern University. “I do think that the traditional methods have to be there. And they have to be very well done. You can get someone’s attention through LinkedIn, but your goal is to get an interview.”
And keep in mind that the hard-copy resume and cover letter are far from obsolete. Mary Spencer, director of career placement at the Milwaukee School of Engineering, said she’s seen an increase in employers asking for paper rather than electronic portfolios at job fairs.
Also, a problem with social media such as Facebook and Twitter is that they may reveal too much personal information to potential employers. Paul, of PwC, oversees new hires and she said social media can cause an unnecessary mix-up of work and personal life. Her suggestion is to keep certain types of social networks completely personal — she says that’s how she uses Facebook — and other types completely professional, such as LinkedIn.
She said job candidates who don’t use social media aren’t likely to be penalized for that by prospective employers. “I personally don’t think that we’re there yet. The employer isn’t there yet,” she said. “The issue with students not using those [methods] means that they are not using a channel and an avenue right there in front of them for free.”

Tips to improve your chances

The degree to which your job hunt on social-media sites is successful may depend on the type of position being sought. For instance, most public-relations firms already connect to people through Twitter and have designated Facebook pages. Same goes for corporate communications positions. However, Kevin Nichols, the chief executive of a small publishing company, said that a search for any job — entry level and professional — can be enhanced through social media.
Three years ago, Nichols started two LinkedIn groups in the San Francisco Bay Area; they now have about 1,500 members. He said social networking is a tried and true method that has worked for him, as well as many of the people in his group. With social media, applicants are able to connect with people within certain companies who can act as an advocate for them within the company.
Nicols offered the following tips for using social media to enhance your job search:
  • Become an active participant on a social network.
  • Find people within your desired industry and let them know you’re searching.
  • Once you become introduced to someone online, even though that might “soften the blow of cold calling,” don’t forget that meeting people face-to-face is still the ultimate goal.
  • Practice what Nichols calls “good job karma” — rather than just asking for help from others, do your part to give back and help others out.
Finally, don’t forget that it’s not always as easy as some make it seem. Brittany Sykes, a recent graduate of Penn State University, has been on the lookout for a public-relations job in the entertainment industry since May. Sykes, 22, said she hasn’t had too much luck, although she follows many PR firms on Twitter and has seen a fair amount of job postings.
The job search can be challenging, she said, but the use of social media is bringing a little hope in her search. “I get stressed out sometimes when my parents drive me crazy [about finding a job]”, she said. “But I get really excited when I make some type of connection.”

How to develop a strong network

By: Kevin L. Nichols

Networking is a skill — better yet, an art form. Those that intuitively have a propensity to get along with others and develop strong bonds are more likely to be successful networkers. There are various intangible components that contribute to a networker’s success. It is important to identify some of these attributes and to strengthen what may not come naturally in order to develop the powerful network that you desire.

The first intangible is self-confidence. Marcus Garvey described it best when he said, “If you have no confidence in yourself, you are twice defeated in the race of life. With confidence, you have won before you have started.” Since relationships are arguably now more of a commodity than the rise or fall of mutual funds or stock prices, confident people are more likely to network with people who they do not know. A confident person is not squeamish and is typically comfortable with striking up conversations, or introducing himself or herself to others in a crowd. This is essential for meeting new people and developing a viable network.

The second intangible is integrity. Integrity is an invaluable component because having it encourages your friends and colleagues to recommend/refer/introduce you to others whom you would like to get to know. (Sometimes you are not aware of why you need to know them, but your network does.) Essentially, having integrity is the best marketing tool because it creates opportunities for people to want to meet you and/or do business with you so that they, too, can benefit from being one of your acquaintances. How you carry yourself and how you handle your business is a direct correlation of how motivated and inspired other professionals will be to network with you.

The final component that will be discussed in this piece is nurturance. Frankly, many networkers underestimate the power of nurturance. Often, friends and colleagues are easily annoyed when someone only calls, emails, texts or sends a message via a social networking site when they “need” something. Your friends and colleagues do not want to feel taken advantage of or used. Thus, it is vital to create opportunities to reach out to your network on a periodic basis to make sure that you are connected in “peace time” just in case you need their backing to go to “war.” No matter how subtle, nurturing your network will allow you to lean on your network multiple times throughout a given time period because your network feels needed, not abused. Finessing this is similar to being in a committed relationship. If done correctly, you will develop a symbiotically respectful relationship with your network with the appropriate amount of giving and taking.

Like any relationship, developing a powerful network is not easy. It takes a lot of work and responsibility. But with confidence, integrity and nurturance, the building blocks are in place for a strong foundation. If you want to make something happen in your life, you need the courage to ask for what you want. Once you have asked, the decision that your network makes (whether or not to assist you) depends on what they know about you, your accomplishments and what type of person you are. How you have managed those relationships will determine whether or not you get the assistance that you desire.

The strength of your network rests in your hands. What will you do with it?

The LinkedIn Downtown SF Networking Group’s 3rd Career Mentorship Symposium: Sponsored by Golden Gate University and KLN Publishing, LLC.

(July 23, 2010 – San Francisco, California).  Have you been on countless interviews since the economy imploded but still are unable to get an offer?  Are you an executive, director, manager, or supervisor looking for opportunities that you are over qualified for?  Could you use a crash course in resume writing, interviewing tips, or assistance with some of the intangibles, such as using social networking to obtain your next job?  If you answered yes to any of these questions and/or know of someone who can, then you should attend the 3rd Career Mentorship and Entrepreneurship Symposium brought to you by the LinkedIn Downtown SF Networking Group.

The Career Mentorship Symposium was created by Kevin L. Nichols, founder and moderator of the group and President of KLN Publishing, LLC., to address the number of group members who had been laid off and/or unemployed for 10 months to a year.  Please visit LinkedIn’s blog at http://blog.linkedin.com/2009/07/16/kevin-nichols-organize-networking-events-for-free-using-your-linkedin-network/ to learn more about how the event was organized and visit http://cbs5.com/video/?id=60996@kpix.dayport.com  for an interview with KPIX CBS 5 regarding same.

The symposium is comprised of 3, 20 minute modules of 7-10 person round-tables, lead by either an in-house corporate recruiter and/or principal at an outside staffing firm on various topics such as resume writing tips, interviewing faux paus, proper etiquette and dress - do’s and don’ts, and using aggressive strategies such as social networking to create job opportunities.  Recently, CNN Money featured the symposium in the following article http://money.cnn.com/2009/11/11/news/economy/_networking/index.htm

Since the economy has changed dramatically within the last 3 years, so has the funding market.  This panel of entrepreneurs/VC/Angel Investors will discuss the investing climate as it is today, what documents are necessary for investors to take entrepreneurs seriously, what factors are considered when evaluating a venture, and what resources people may avail themselves of in order to prepare for the process. Entrepreneurs Ralph Marx, Tom Cervantez, and Boku Kodama will be our featured panelists.

The Career Mentorship & Entrepreneurship Symposium will take place Friday, August 6, 2010, from noon to 5:30pm, at Golden Gate University.  In order to attend, you must join the LinkedIn Downtown SF Networking Group by visiting http://ggu.eventbrite.com and visit the group’s discussion thread for the link to RSVP.  For more information, please visit the group’s blog at http://linkedindowntownsf.blogspot.com.

The Bay Area's Carpool Debate

By: Kevin L. Nichols

SAN FRANCISCO, Calif. (July 1, 2010)
As many of you know, today marks the first day of the anticipated bridge toll increases to $5-$6 depending on the time you cross. A derivative of this revenue generating opportunity by the State, is the carpool toll of $2.50 during peek hours. There is some confusion and ambiguity regarding how this toll applies and effects carpoolers specifically.

I have taken an informal poll of both drivers and carpoolers. Most drivers are hoping that carpoolers donate $1 each to help offset the new toll. Others feel that they choose to still drive across the bridge and prefer to pay $2.50 rather than $5-$6.

What do you think? Should carpoolers pay to ride across the bridge even though they are saving their drivers time and an additional $2.50-$3.50? Let us know.

Earth Day 2010: Coming of Age!

By Kelle’ Lynch McMahon, President Green Science Academy

As we move into the second decade of the 21st century, we are now celebrating the 40th anniversary of the first Earth day celebration circa 1970. Looking back over the past decades one wonders what real progress has been made to support the preservation of the planet.

The pioneers of the green movement wanted to bring people together to become aware of the dangers looming of development and overpopulation, educate people to improve their knowledge of what was happening to the planet and celebrate the enormous beauty of the place we call home. This struggle continues today. We have 2/3 of the world population with no access to clean drinking water. 1/3 of the world is living with no electricity or form of power to run machinery. Carbon emissions and depletion of the ozone are accelerating at a rate that has doubled in 25 years. Some say its overpopulation, others argue that its development and industrialization of the world that is causing the demise. I believe that we are all contributors. We must focus of reducing consumption, reuse of materials and recycle everything we possibly can to impact the environment.

We have made great strides in setting the pace for change in many areas that affect the global marketplace.
 According to statistics calculated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the United States is much better today than they were 25 years ago. [Note:1]
 Currently, it would take 20 of today's new automobiles to release the same number of emissions as one 1960’s model. [Note:2]
 Carbon monoxide emissions (CO) have decreased by 33 percent. Forty-one fewer tons are being produced per year as a result of current efforts. [Note:3]
 Dropping 14 million tons per year, volatile organic compound emissions have decreased by 42 percent. Particulate matter emissions reduced by 75 percent. [Note:4]
Looking at these statistics should make us feel proud of the changes we have made, but we still have a long way to go.
